The following are two workshops designed for homeschooled middle school students. Families may sign their child up for one or both sessions.

Writing & Composition I

This 5-week, 10-hour class for middle schoolers begins to build analytical writing skills that students will use throughout the rest of their education. Students will practice creating a thesis, providing textual evidence, organizing ideas, and building analytical arguments. Students will write a variety of short pieces that build these skills, and create one 5-paragraph essay to synthesize the skills they have learned. Creative writing, journaling, and language games alongside more formal academic writing will encourage and enhance a relationship to and understanding of language. Students will feel safe, supported, and challenged in this rich learning environment. Thursdays 9/8-10/6, 10:30am-12:30pm. St. Edward’s University (room # TBA). Recommended age group: 7th-8th grade. Space is limited to 10 students.

Writing & Composition II

This 5-week, 10-hour class builds on the analytical skills students learned in WCI. Students will learn Aristotle’s appeals and apply them to persuasive essay writing, using strong evidence and expressive ideas to communicate powerfully. Students will build the portfolio they began in WCI, and creative writing, journaling, and language games will continue to enrich student relationships to and understanding of rhetoric. Thursdays, 10/27-12/1 (no class on 11/24), 10:30am-12:30pm. St. Edward’s University (room # TBA). Recommended age group: 7th-8th grade. Space is limited to 10 students.

Registration due for WCI no later than August 26. $285 per course, or $550 if registering for both WCI & WCII together.
