8th-12th Grade Essay Writing 

In this Sunday essay writing course we’ll be building up the skills necessary to write expository essays, as well as discussing and introducing personal and argumentative essays. Though we will talk about the standard five paragraph format, the emphasis will be on making work that goes beyond the rigidity of what is usually taught in schools and allows for the creativity you see from professional writers.

Throughout the semester we’ll be discussing work from Patricia Lockwood, Claudia Rankine, and Zadie Smith, among others. At first, students will be focusing on short writing assignments that center on the fundamentals, and by the end of the semester we’ll complete a longer essay bringing everything we’ve learned together.

This would be a great course for anyone who will eventually write an IB essay or anyone gearing up to write a college essay. Major skills we’ll work on through the course include brainstorming, researching, outlining, and properly using MLA format.

Sunday 1-2:30pm, Sept 8-Dec 8 (no classes the week of Thanksgiving)

Deadline for registration is August 15. The class caps out at 6 students.
To create an intimate, supportive environment, we ask that students do commit to the full semester. Missing occasional classes is fine (we get it!) but semester payments must be made in full and are nonrefundable.
